Nice link to Raj’s discussion of unemployment insurance. The laser-like focus on the marginal tax effects (a la Dr. Mulligan: http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/12/the-microeconomics-of-poverty-since-2007/) can actually get in the way of asking if it is indeed these tax effects that are driving observed behavior (in the sense of being the dominant driver of the variation). A glance at the summary of his book (linked in the article) reveals the … let’s call it counterintuitive … conclusions that may result.
